Engagement Ring Overview

An engagement is a symbol of love and impending marriage between a man and a woman. There is not a set prerequisite for determining what ring needs to be given; it is dependent upon on personal tastes. Also, there is no predetermined time frame for when the ring should be presented to a woman. The ring is typically given when a man proposes to his girlfriend, signifying that he is ready to make their relationship permanent. The ring is a way for others to quickly deduce that a woman is in fact in a serious relationship and about to be married.

Engagement rings come in a variety of sizes and can be as extravagant or plain as your personal tastes go. The more extravagant the ring, the more expensive it will be to purchase an engagement ring. There are also a lot of variations in which gem is on the band. The most common is the diamond, but there are engagement rings that have opals and other precious stones to decorate the ring. Again, which gem is chosen is dependant upon the tastes of who is giving and who is receiving the ring.

There is also not a set time when an engagement ring should be presented. Some couples exchange rings after a couple of months, whereas others do not exchange them for several years. The time that an engagement ring is exchanged depends on many variables that a couple needs to consider so that they can be sure of whether or not they are ready for the commitment of marriage.

In Western traditions the engagement ring is given by a man to signify his acceptance of marriage and upon the woman’s acceptance shows that she agrees to be married. The engagement ring in a sense is a promise and agreement to take their relationship to marriage. The engagement ring also shows others that a woman has lost her single status, and is looking towards marriage.

Engagement rings are a popular tradition in most parts of the world. Due to personal tastes and finances there are a multitude of engagement rings to choose from, from a variety of different jewelry stores. The tradition of giving an engagement ring is also extremely flexible, because again, the time that a ring and a proposal are given is dependent upon the couple. By accepting the engagement ring the woman is agreeing to marriage to the man who is proposing.
